7 ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
This year we kicked off the term with a design challenge centered around designing 3 pieces that included various elements of fashion design. The elements of fashion design we focused on were: Color, Line, Value, Space, Shape, Form, and Texture. The designs and corresponding mood boards below all focus on two of those elements of design. This project helped me improve my drawing and design skills and also opened my eyes to all of the different elements of fashion that I was less aware of previously.
Texture & Value
This dress has an ombre, dark purple to light gold which serves as the value and has a snake-skin texture. This helped me be more aware of the role that texture can play in fashion design. Before, texture had never really been a consideration of mine while designing clothes. I knew instantly for this design I wanted to do something with snakes because it was the first texture that came to mind. I chose to do an ombre because it allowed me to utilize a dark purple which allowed me to portray that dark ominous feeling associated with snakes while also allowing my design to look luxurious by transitioning into gold.
Shape & Form
I decided I wanted my dress to have an overall circular shape and in order to make it fun I wanted those circles to be bubble-like. At first, I was thinking of just doing a few big bubbles as the dress. However, I chose to do a bunch of small bubbles instead because I thought it gave the design more depth and interest. I also think that having the small bubbles start at the waistline gave the design a better, more flattering, form.
Color & Line
This dress would be constructed of metal rings and glow-in-the-dark string, arranged in neon blocks of color. I am very indecisive, so naturally, I couldn't choose which color group to choose so I decided to go with all of them. I don't see a lot of designs using a lot of colors so I thought this would also add a level of interest. When I was thinking about lines I decided I didn't want just a straight line, that is why I went with strings, it is more "moldable." I also wanted to make these strings glow in the dark because the whole point of this dress is to be fun.
